I think I CAN!
Last fall I had the privilege of reading one of my all time favorite children’s books to a friend’s son, The Little Engine That Could, by Watty Piper.
Do you remember this fabulous children’s classic? As I was reading it to him tears were swelling in my eyes and my life was flashing in front of me.
This is such a wonderful story about determination, thoughts and our attitudes. If we think we can, we can! It made me think of all the real life engines in our lives and how they affect us.
You know, the Big Engine who has the I am too important attitude. The shiny new passenger engine who has the I am too good attitude. The old rusty engine who has the I’m too old attitude.
Then there is the little blue engine who has the I think I can attitude!
The one who had the courage, the determination; drive and compassion for the people to get those toys over the mountain. I believe throughout my life I have played all those engines.
When it comes to my core, my essence and my true self I always come back to my “I am the little blue engine that could” attitude.
It’s important to be our own little engines that could; however, sometimes we need our friends, family or coworkers to hold that little blue engine space for us.
I am blessed to have a few people in my life who are my Little Blue Engines that could and are there for me when I am making big, life changing profound decisions.
One of them is my mother. I guess you would call her the Big Engine That Could because she is a force. This is what she posted on my refrigerator while visiting last May.
- I can do it.
- I will do it.
- I have to do it.
- I have to do it no matter what happens.
Which engine are you? Are you feeling stuck like you just can’t get over the mountain right now?
Who are the little blue engines in your life? Do they know your strength and determination?
If so, do they inspire you to “I think I can?” Do they say to you “I thought you could?”
…Stop by your local bookstore this week and read The Little Engine That Could, it just might be that little gift to yourself that you needed!
Cheers to you and becoming the Little Blue Engine That Could! I think I can, I thought I could! Let’s do this!
